It is both fascinating and a great honor to witness what a week without digital devices—essentially a holistic dopamine fast—does to people. Of course, the experiences are not the same for everyone; they depend on where each person is in their life and what they bring with them to the retreat.
What many share, however, is that over the course of the week, unprocessed emotions rise to the surface—both big and small. In the rush of everyday life, it is often easy to overlook our own feelings without even noticing. For some, suppressing or neglecting emotions has become a default coping mechanism, and this may be the first time in years that they truly feel their feelings. The depth of change largely depends on how much unprocessed material a person carries within. A retreat can become a turning point—a place where there is finally the opportunity and space to meet the emotional material that has been repressed for too long.
How, then, are emotions connected to calming the nervous system? In this way: nervous system stress numbs us to our feelings. When stressed, we are not open or sensitive to our inner experience; we simply do not have the capacity for it. We are in survival mode. As some wise person once said, “Stress is a free and always-available numbing agent for all of us equally—the drug provided by our inner pharmacy against uncomfortable emotions.”
Thus, we do not necessarily need external substances such as alcohol or food, nor escapes like endless scrolling on social media or compulsive exercise, to remain disconnected from our feelings—often unconsciously, and sometimes consciously. In de-stressing, the numbing starts to melt, and we start to feel again.

Because of this emotional avoidance, it can be difficult to settle into the silence of a restorative retreat, into empty space. When you stop and become present, the nervous system hyper arousal and the anxiety caused by an overbearing emotional load linked to bypassed feelings begin to surface. Courageously meeting discomfort and emotions, however, is what breaks the vicious cycle of restlessness that keeps us moving manically and reaching compulsively for our smart devices. Feeling our emotions is also an act of deep connection with ourselves, which brings our body and mind a sense of true inner security and peace.
The retreat environment is purposefully created as a space with minimal stressors, stripping away all outer expectations to socialize, to perform, and to take responsibility, together with all outer stressors like sensual stimuli and information. In this silence is a critical ingredient. It offers us a clear and safe container to withdraw into and receive deep restoration—no need to worry about how to relate to or what to say to fellow guests, no possibility to entertain ourselves with outer content or put more strain on the nervous system with more stimuli and information.
On a digital detox silent retreat, your nervous system is safe to soften, re-sensitize, and surrender enough to feel the emotions that have long been waiting for your attention. In doing so, you create genuine capacity within your nervous system to meet new life challenges and receive joy, allowing you to enjoy living rather than merely surviving.
Our calendar is open for bookings now for 1-4 weeks retreats from Mon 18 May – Mon 14 September 2026 at www.utulanature.com.
